Netherlands: Liberian family harassed

A recent commentator wrote that immigrant youth are always the ones making trouble. The truth is that Dutch youth know very well how to make trouble too. Moroccans might be overrepresented in the crime statistics, but they don't account for all crimes.

A Liberian family from Waspik in North Brabant is harassed so much that the mother and the four children have temporarily gone into hiding. The municipality promised the mother a safe and calm place in the nearby town of Waalwijk, said a spokesperson of the Waalwijk municipality Tuesday. Until they can move, the family is hiding.

The Hayes family, a mother and four children, have been harassed for a year already by a group of youth who swear at the Liberians and throw fireworks and eggs at their house, in what is racist harassment. A daughter of the family was harassed Friday evening by a group of youth, who run into her with a scooter.

The municipality, refugee service and the local youth work are aware of the problem but have not found a solution. On Saturday te local newpaper Brabants Dagblad wrote about the case extensively.

The family has fled the war in Liberia. The father has died. "I fled the war and thought it will be safe here," says the mother, Ophelia Hayes Saturday in the paper. "But now I still don't have peace." She said she wants a safe and calm place for her and children as soon as possible.

The Hayes family is one of the few immigrant families in Waspik (5000 residents). The municipality and the police are holding a group of youth responsible, explained the mayor. As far as its known there have been no arrests in the case.

After earlier incidents a plan was made up in April, but it has not worked. Van Dongen says that "the situation has escalated". The municipality says that steps will be taken against the perpetrators.

Well then, maybe this Liberian family should get the message that they are not welcome or wanted in Europe and should go back to Africa where they belong.

It hurts to hear the plight of refugees. The world is now a global village. The Dutch government freely agreed and accepted these refugees as a sign of their gesture and support to UNHCR. It is their responsibility to educate their racist youths population of their obligations to the world. The security of those Liberian lies on the shouders of the Dutch government. If they are unable to stop the harrassment, then send the Liberia back home. or let UNHCR knows so they can relocate them somewhere else.
