Norway: The Norwegian Burka

Tonje Nordmo, Maria Kartveit and Cedric Stevens of the Norwegian fashion house Marked Moskva have come out with a Norwegian burka collection. I don't think they're clear themselves on what they want to show, but they did get a lot of attention. The Muslim women present at the show, wearing hijab and jeans, were not as impressed and were in fact quite upset, saying it was discriminatory and put Muslims in a bad light.

The fashion house had come out with provocative designs before. In the past they had a 'junkie clothing' line, inspired by the 'drug addicts on the street and their fantastic aesthetics.'

Why did they create a burka collection?

They want to create a new burka collection that show more of a person's personality and that is adapted to the Norwegian climate and lifestyle. This way Norwegian Muslims can do 'more Norwegian' things without feeling like outsiders. Such as wearing a jeans burka to go to a cafe.

They claim they got positive responses from Muslim girls, but they're not aiming only at Muslims.

Mariak Kartveit: There are certain advantages to a burka. We will make it possible for Norwegians to wear a burka. Only we sell burkas in Norway.

They say a burka gives one freedom, and is a supplement to the daily wardrobe. when one wants to hide, or has a bad hair day.

You can see the collection here.

Update:

Given the discussion on LGF about whether this burka show is for real or not (Norway Welcomes Their New Overlords), I've turned to Marked Moskva and asked for more info. They were kind enough to answer and their response follows:

We wanted to make a burka collection that suits the norwegian culture and climate. We want norwegian women to try to wear burka, and feel the freedom that comes with it. We ourselves wear burka at a regular basis.

We also felt that the norwegians often were negative towards the traditional black burka, because they relate to the terrorvision in the news. We wanted people in Norway to get a more positive view on this clothing. Maybe next time they meet a woman wearing burka, they will not know wether it is a norwegian woman, man or an emmigrant, and they are forced to respond respectfully.

The muslims do not have patent on the burka. The french do not have patent on high-heels.

To suggest that this is an art-project is an direct insult.

Our intension in short words:
If you havent tried it, don`t hate it.

Love Marked Moskva

Hello,

the statement of the fashion house was:

"We want norwegian women to try to wear burka, and feel the freedom that comes with it. We ourselves wear burka at a regular basis."

May I ask about the sales meanwhile (after three months)? And what means "regular basis"? Everyday or once the year?

"We also felt that the norwegians often were negative towards the traditional black burka, because they relate to the terrorvision in the news."

Not only the norwegians ...

"We wanted people in Norway to get a more positive view on this clothing. Maybe next time they meet a woman wearing burka, they will not know wether it is a norwegian woman, man or an emmigrant, ..."

I guess face veils are worn rather by inhabitants, who converted to Islam.

"... and they are forced to respond respectfully."

Anyway, it´s worth to get people of different beliefs closer together.

"The muslims do not have patent on the burka."

Well, almost victims of stalking, of accidents or cancer-patients being in chemo-therapy (as examples) may profit by this gearment.

"To suggest that this is an art-project is an direct insult."

Not really, art cann´t be seen as something negatve. Otherwise - meanwhile seems, that the strange jackets sold well at UK, I didn´t see reports about the burqas.
