Denmark: School trip to Turkey to encourage integration

Bistrup school in Birkerød has an untraditional idea for encouraging integration and comradeship.

The school has an immigrant population of about 12% and intends to send 10 boys from the higher grades - 5 Danish and 5 of immigrant background - on a short trip to the Turkish village Kulu. There, together with a couple of the school's employees and the newly employed integration teacher Deniz Öcal, they will experience culture in a Muslim country. The school hopes that the boys will start off a positive development and function as ambassadors for more cultural understanding and respect.

Integration consultant Fahmy Almajid is critical of the initiative, and says that such programs aren't very profitable. he recommends the school works more locally.
