Rome: Mayoral candidate to visit Grand Mosque

Rome mayoral candidate, Gianni Alemanno, will on Thursday visit the Italian Islamic Cultural Centre in the capital, known as the city's Grand Mosque.

Alemanno belongs to the conservative People of Freedom coalition of prime minister-elect Silvio Berlusconi and is the centre-right candidate in the run off mayoral election this weekend.

His opponent is the centre-left Democractic Party candidate, Francesco Rutelli. who was mayor of Rome between 1993 and 2001.

The news of Alemanno's visit to the mosque was announced in a report in the Rome-based Islamic magazine, "Muslim Family" and was confirmed by Alemanno's press office.

"The mosque in Rome is a unique Islamic institution of the Italian republic and it is the first time that a candidate for mayor is coming on a visit," said the magazine report.

"During his visit, Alemanno will meet some Muslim representatives and in particular the secretary general of the Islamic centre, Abdellah Redouane."
