France: Of mice and men

Philippe Geluck, a Belgian comedian, compared Muslims to mice during the radio show "Europe 1 Découverte", hosted by Michel Drucker. The show, aired Oct. 15, was about cats and also featured veterinarian Joël Dehasse.

The show can be heard here, and the exchange in question is at around 24 mins.

Joël Dehasse: .. two thousand years ago there were no mice, no rats.. Europe was invaded by invasions of mice and rats..

Michel Drucker: .. and then the cat was very useful for chasing away mice..

Joël Dehasse: .. it chased mice and rats and it protected against the plague..

Philippe Geluck: ... at that time Charles Martel tried to stop the mice at Poitier, but that didn't happen...

The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) thinks Geluck had gone too far with his comments. Alexandre Bompard, executive director of Europe 1 sent a message to the CFCM regretting the statements brought into question were made as a joke by the great humorist of great moral strictness and which can shock Muslim listeners.

Bompard assured that Drucker and Geluck are deeply sorry and had no intention of going against the Muslims of France or provoking them. They will explain themselves on the air Monday.

The ignorance of Western Europeans with regard to the history of Eastern Europe never ceases to amaze me.

Tatar Muslims were granted noble status in Poland in the fourteenth century and remained an important segment of the gentry until well into the 20th century when WWI, exclusionary tendencies among ethnic Poles, the German Nazis and communism practically eliminated the community.

The Wikipedia entry Lipka Tatars discusses Polish Lithuanian Tatar Muslims as does my blog Ethnic Ashkenazim Against Zionist Israel in Reinterpreting History to Serve Islamophoba.

It is worth mentioning that the first Nobel prize awarded to someone born in historic Poland went to Maria Skłodowska–Curie (Marie Curie) of Polish Catholic aristocratic ancestry, and the second went to Henryk Sienkiewicz of Polish Tatar Muslim aristocratic ancestry.

The American actor Charles Bronson (Charles Dennis Buchinsky, Lithuanian name Karolis Bučinskis) is a Lipka Tatar Muslim American.

Note that the historic Grand Duchy of Lithuania does not correspond exactly to modern Lithuania and was part of Commonwealth Poland (Rzeczpospolita Polska).

The great Polish nationalist poem Pan Tadeusz by Adam Bernard Mickiewicz (in Belarusian, Адам Міцкевіч; in Lithuanian, Adomas Bernardas Mickevičius) starts, "O Lithuania."

Some sources including the Jewish Encyclopedia argue that Mickiewicz' mother was of Jewish Frankist origin. Even though the claim is dubious, Mickiewicz was extremely sympathetic to Polish Jews.

Intersting person, this joachim martillo. Checking his blog he appreciates that he has been cited bij Israel Shamir. The ignorance of joachim martillo with regard to Israel Shamir amazes me even more as he wants to give lessons to others. Shamir is not a jew but a russian antisemite. Even that antisemite that the PLO doesn't want any realtions with the guy.

Joachim Martillo,

If you have something to say about the article you're commenting on, please do. I fail to see the connection between Tatar Muslims and a Belgian commenting about Charles Martel. Please don't use my blog as a link platform.

Perhaps, I was not clear enough, but I am irritated that Western Europeans (including the Belgian comedians) and Americans ignorantly believe that the history of Islam in Europe is somehow defined by Poitiers, the Reconquista and the Siege of Vienna.

We already have a model for the coexistence of Islam within Europe, and that model worked well for approximately 500 years. It is worth discussing.

Israel Shamir emigrated from the Soviet Union to Israel, served in the IDF and then became a critic of Zionism. It is standard operating procedures for Zionists to call such people anti-Semites or self-hating Jews.

Israel Shamir NEVER EVER served in the IDF. That's a hoax, a legend.
He is not even a jew. His resume is a full lie. Dominique Vidal and Ilan Halevi of the PLO also unmasked that guy.
More about it here:

Poor Martillo, in such good company with a real antisemite.

Here is title from the article lezersbrieven recommended to me:

Israel Shamir: « Juif Israélien »... et antisémite virulent

It states clearly that he is an Israeli Jew.

I went through most of the references. None denied that he served in the IDF.

As I see it, since his conversion to Russian Orthodoxy, Shamir is trying to act as the quintessential Russian Orthodox intellectual and consequently discusses Jews in a way that tabu-ridden Americans find uncomfortable.

It is not the way I discuss the issues as a Jewish studies scholar that writes about the political economy of the Jews in the USA and Israel, but in point of fact one simply cannot argue with him when he calls Jews Christ-killers, for the Talmud takes credit for the trial and execution of Jesus.

Rejecting the Talmud is a rejection of the heritage of Rabbinic Judaism, and Russian Karaite Jews used their rejection of the Talmud in order to dissociate themselves from Rabbinic Jews on the issue of deicide.

Ibish and Abunimah simply did not understand Shamir's discussion Palestinians versus Jews at Tufts because they neither speak Hebrew (as both Shamir and I do) nor do they function within the Israeli intellectual environment.

It was a joke. He inverted the normal categories with which Israeli Zionists discuss Jews and Palestinians.

Because of their intellectual framework, Zionists are without doubt racists, but for flinging that framework back at Zionists, Shamir should be commended and not excoriated.

To : Joachim, what on earth is: "Ethnic Ashkenazim Against Zionist Israel"?
Eshkenazim are not an "ethnicity", they are Eastern European Jews ho share the same DNA as Sfardic (Arabic) Jews, as proven lately.

And... what are all those links to neo nazis garbage sites and data doing on your blog "Ashkenazim Against Zionist Israel"? if it were true what you claim that you are merely against "zionism" and not for Hitler's Holocaust to be occuring again???
