Switzerland: Dispute over minaret for planned mosque

The national vote to ban the construction of minarets has reawakened fierce debate over the future of a building project in Langenthal, in the canton of Bern, where the Muslim community had been given permission to construct a mosque with a minaret.

The authorization for the project, granted by the city in 2006, was put on hold in July this year following a protest by the 'Stop Minarets' committee.

Opponents of the minaret project say Sunday's vote clearly cancels the authorization, as it had been put on hold.

But the town's Muslim community say that if the permission to build the minaret is now withdrawn, they'll take their case to the federal court, or even the European Court for Human Rights.
