------------

The 28 year old man who tried to kill caricaturist Kurt Westergaard Friday night was arrested in Kenya five months ago. He was suspected of participating in a foiled terrorist p0lot against the American Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, reports Politiken based on several sources close to the case.

He was freed in September 2009 because the Kenyan police has no evidence against him. He then came back to Denmark.

The Police Security Service, PET, has kept an eye on the 28 year old for some time, but according to PET head Jakob Scharf did not have enough evidence to arrest or deport him.

PET couldn't follow him all day either, and that's why the Somali could get to Aarhus Friday evening unimpeded, break into Kurt Westergaard's home and threaten the caricaturist with an axe and a knife.

The caricaturist escaped unharmed, while the 28 year old was injured from the police shooting, and is now in jail until Jan. 27th - suspected of attempted murder against Kurt Westergaard and an agent.

PET head Jakob Scharf doesn't think that the PET failed, though the 28 year old succeeded in getting into the caricaturist's house.

"We can never guarantee security 100% - never when, as presumably here, there's an impulsive act, and we also want to respect the caricaturist's wish to live a reasonably orderly life."

The 28 year old was born in Somalia, came to Denmark when he was 16 and has a DAnish residence permit. He belongs to a small group of very extremist Somalis in Denmark, which the PET keeps an eye on, and in the past has warned against.

PET think though, that the 28 year old man acted on his own and impulsively, when on Friday, shortly after 10PM, he broke into Kurt Westergaard's home in Viby, outside Aarhus.

According to PET, the man has close ties to the Somali terrorist organizatio al-Shabab, and to al-Qaeda heads in East Africa. PET think that he's also part of a terrorist network linked to Denmark, which allegedly finances and plans terrorist activities also in Somalia.

When the 28 year old was arrested in Kenya in August, he was charged together with four others of planning a terror attack against a bus station and two hotels, including the Hotel Intercontinental, where Hillary Clinton participated in an African development summit.

The operation was planned by al-Shabaab, according to Kenyan police.

In a press conference in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, a spokesperson of al-Shabaab denied that the 28 year old man was a member of the organization.

"But we approve that he tried to kill that man, who insulted our prophet. It sends a clear signal to Danish-Somalis to act and kill that man - regardless of the price."
